Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses relaxation methods to calm the conscious part of the mind. This allows the unconscious mind to be open to suggestions. It also allows it to bring into awareness information that may help create a shift in thought, behaviour or feeling. Through this process, the patient can access their inner potential for overcoming blockages and resolving physical, emotional, personal and habitual issues.
Most people think of therapeutic hypnotherapy as being similar to stage hypnosis. However, this isn’t the case. First and foremost, a hypnotherapist can only put a patient in trance with the patient’s permission. If a patient chooses to resist, they will not relax enough to enter a hypnotic state. Moreover, many hypnotherapist prefer to use progressive relaxation to bring their patient gradually into hypnosis.
Even though the patient would feel extremely relaxed when in trance, they would remain aware of their surrounding environment and most patients remember the entire session when they return to their normal state of consciousness.

What to expect from a hypnotherapy session
- A hypnotherapy session starts with a thorough consultation, during which the patient discusses their main concerns and priorities.
- The therapist would then make sure the patient is relaxed and, with their permission, proceed to putting them in a state of trance.
- When the patient is in trance, the therapy will evolve according to the consultation and to the information that may come through in hypnosis.
- Once the patient exits the hypnotic state, they should remember the entire session. Furthermore, they may feel either tired or alert.
